Eigen Labs Launches EigenCloud, Secures $70M From A16z Crypto
HomeNews* Eigen Labs launched EigenCloud, a new platform aiming to bring blockchain-level trust to Web2 and Web3 applications.
The restaking protocol at the core of EigenCloud enables Ethereum stakers to use their staked ETH to secure new third-party services called autonomous verifiable services (AVSs). This approach offers potential rewards for stakers and creates a link between application usage and network participation. More than $12 billion in restaked assets are currently securing over 200 AVSs in areas like oracles, AI workflows, and decentralized middleware.
This month, EigenDA recorded a performance upgrade, reaching data throughput rates of 50 megabytes per second on Ethereum testnets. EigenVerify is also launching a preview, enabling automated dispute resolution in environments such as AI agents and prediction markets. Later this year, EigenCompute will allow developers to confirm computation results using cryptoeconomic guarantees. In April, EigenLayer introduced slashing, a process that allows AVSs to penalize misbehaving node operators. This helps enforce correct behavior across different application types.
The platform is positioned to act as a “verifiability-as-a-service” provider, similar to how cloud providers like AWS or Google Cloud offer cloud services, but with built-in accountability. Usage fees for services like EigenVerify and EigenCompute will be paid in the EIGEN token, which also supports incentives and network development. Details on pricing for EigenCompute have not been released.
While EigenLayer leads in restaking solutions, competitors like Celestia, Story Protocol, and Optimism’s Cannon are developing similar verifiable infrastructure. EigenCloud’s approach combines data, computation, and dispute resolution into a single trust-focused system. However, slashing is still optional for AVSs, and there is uncertainty around how regulatory frameworks will handle verifiability in sectors like AI, healthcare, and finance.
Sreeram Kannan, CEO of Eigen Labs, said, “EigenCloud will enable the next generation of disruptive, mass-market crypto apps, closing the gap between what developers want to build onchain and what blockchains allow them to build… [it] expands the programmability of crypto and makes virtually anything verifiable onchain.” Joe Lubin, co-founder of Ethereum, described verifiability as a key part of the modern internet, and Ali Yahya, General Partner at a16z crypto, said, “EigenLayer is surmounting the technical bottlenecks of blockchains to enable a new category of applications built on verifiable solutions.”
