OpenAI GPT-5 is expected to debut this summer! Sam Altman reveals the progress of the StarGate project in collaboration with Jony Ive.
In an interview on 6/19, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman talked about a number of core topics of external concern. Such as the latest definition of artificial general intelligence (AGI), GPT-5 launch schedule, to the initial $100 billion Stargate project (StarGate) with SoftBank and Oracle, and even revealed with the former Apple Progress (Apple) lead designer Jony Ive working together to create a new AI device.
The definition of AGI has been continuously updated, and scientific breakthroughs are the key to human progress.
Regarding how to define general artificial intelligence (AGI) standards, Altman stated:
"If we go back to how everyone defined AGI five years ago, today's AI has already achieved that, and even does it better."
But he believes that rather than worrying about the definition of AGI, it is better to think about what the definition of "superintelligence" ( Superintelligence ) is. He then pointed out that if AI can assist humans in discovering entirely new scientific breakthroughs, that is the definition of superintelligence. He emphasized:
"The key to making human life better and more progressive often lies in discovering more scientific breakthroughs."
GPT-5 is confirmed to debut this summer, with a clearer version naming.
When asked about the most concerned topic regarding when GPT-5 will be released, Altman stated that it will probably be "this summer."
However, he also added that large models now are not like before when they were "trained once and then released," but rather they are continuously fine-tuned and optimized, like GPT-4o which is continuously improved through (Post-Train).
In the future, OpenAI may more clearly indicate each version adjustment, such as "GPT-5.1" or "GPT-5.2", to avoid user confusion.
StarGate aims to meet global computing power demands.
When discussing the super computing power project "StarGate", Altman stated that this project is "unprecedented." He admitted that the current computing power is far from sufficient to meet the ambitions of what everyone wants to do, and further pointed out:
"If people knew what an increase of 10 times, or even 100 times, in computing power could bring, he believes everyone would be eager to upgrade."
Altman added that to apply AI to hundreds of millions, or even billions of people worldwide, requires massive infrastructure investment. The location of StarGate is in Abilene, Texas, USA (, accounting for about 10% of the overall budget of 500 billion dollars.
He also revealed that after recently visiting the construction site, he described the scene as extremely spectacular with thousands of workers working and GPU racks being installed one after another, and the speed of progress is shocking.

Altman is optimistic about nuclear energy, which will undoubtedly be a core energy source supporting AI development.
When talking about the enormous energy demand of AI, Altman stated that there are currently various combinations such as natural gas, solar energy, and nuclear energy to meet energy needs, even advanced nuclear technologies like "nuclear fission" and "nuclear fusion" are very promising in his view, and nuclear energy will become the core energy supporting the development of AI in the future.
However, Altman pointed out that although more energy will still be needed in the short term, he believes this is a necessary process for the scaling of AI.
The AI future device being developed in collaboration with Jony Ive.
In addition to software and infrastructure, OpenAI is also actively laying out its AI hardware field. Altman stated that OpenAI is collaborating with former Apple Chief Designer Jony Ive to develop a new type of AI device, and the partnership has been underway for some time.
Altman emphasized that this is not a traditional computer or mobile phone, but a new device tailored for the AI era, with stronger environmental awareness and understanding of life situations, and this product still needs time to perfect, and the way users interact with the device in the future will be significantly different from the past screen and keyboard-based operation mode.
