Bitcoin is winning big in 2025, and now it’s official. According to a recent report shared by Cointelegraph, Bank of America has named Bitcoin the best-performing currency of the year so far.

This comes from BofA’s July “Cross-Asset Winners & Losers” report, where Bitcoin topped the foreign exchange (FX) category with a 51.7% return in U.S. dollar terms. That’s a huge lead over any national currency, and another sign that crypto is stepping into the mainstream in a big way.

Bitcoin Beats Every Currency on the List

In the Bank of America report, Bitcoin leaves traditional currencies far behind. The Brazilian real is second place in the FX category with just 8.3% returns, followed by the Indian rupee at 3.3%, and the Swiss franc at 3.4%.

On the flip side, some major currencies have struggled in 2025. The Japanese yen is down 9.3%, the British pound has slipped 1.1%, and the Argentine peso dropped more than 12%.

That puts Bitcoin far ahead, clearly standing out as the top-performing currency, even though it isn’t issued by any government.

Why Is Bitcoin Doing So Well?

Bitcoin’s strong year so far is no surprise to many in the crypto space. Its price has been rising steadily, breaking new all-time highs and gaining more attention from both retail and institutional investors.

Experts say a few big reasons are behind this rally:

  • More institutional interest from big investment firms
  • Growing global adoption of crypto in countries with weak currencies
  • Bitcoin’s limited supply making it attractive during inflation
  • A strong push from the broader crypto market

And even with all the excitement around newer altcoins and meme coins, Bitcoin continues to show that it’s still the king of crypto.

Bitcoin vs Traditional Assets

Bitcoin’s performance isn’t just impressive among currencies. In BofA’s full list of asset classes, Bitcoin’s 51.7% gain beats many traditional investments too, including stocks, government bonds, and most commodities.

While assets like gold and private equity also performed well in 2025, Bitcoin stood out in the FX space for one key reason: It’s not tied to any central bank, and that independence is becoming more valuable in today’s unpredictable financial world.

What This Means for Crypto

Being named the best-performing currency by a top U.S. bank is more than just a headline, it’s a milestone.

Just a few years ago, Bitcoin was called a bubble or internet money. Today, it’s outperforming major world currencies and being tracked by top banks like Bank of America. That’s a huge shift in how the financial world sees crypto.

As 2025 continues, more investors may start to see Bitcoin not just as a risky bet, but as a serious, long-term asset worth holding.
