On May 23, a16z-backed AI startup Character.AI launched a mobile app that has attracted more than 1.7 million new installs in less than a week, TechCrunch reported. The mobile version of the AI chatbot platform is said to be rolling out to iOS and Android users globally, with strong performance on Google Play in particular. The app surpassed 700,000 Android installs in its first 48 hours, putting it ahead of top entertainment apps like Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video. Before the launch of the app, Character.AI’s web app received more than 200 million monthly visits, and users spent an average of 29 minutes per visit, a figure the company says is 300% higher than ChatGPT, Character.AI said. As previously reported, AI start-up Character.AI received US$150 million in financing led by a16z.
