The Bitcoin scandal could not overthrow the government in Czechia.
While the crypto world is focused on developments such as the Iran-Israel conflict and the Fed's decision, in Czechia, the government is on the verge of falling. In the vote held, the government's fall was prevented with 94 votes in favor against 98 votes against.
Czech Republic's Justice Minister Pavel Blazek, who resigned on May 31, accepted 468 Bitcoins from Tomas Jirikovsky, a former darknet site founder.
A complicated event...
However, the minister took these BTCs not into his personal wallet, but into the state's wallet. Because this was actually a donation made to the state.
The Czech state had seized the Bitcoins of Tomas Jirikovsky, a criminal convicted of drug trafficking on the darknet. However, due to a "technical error," the Czech state returned these Bitcoins to him.
At an unspecified time, Tomas Jirikovsky returned these BTCs to the state. The one who accepted the return was Minister of Justice Pavel Blazek.
The fate of the remaining money is uncertain
However, the question marks continued to increase from here on. The ministry later sold these Bitcoins officially through an auction process. Only 30% of the money obtained from this sale went into the state treasury. The fate of the remaining portion, however, remained uncertain.
With the emergence of this situation, the opposition practically rose up. After the incident, Blazek resigned from his position on May 31. The new minister, Eva Decroix, initiated an independent audit and promised transparency. The opposition used this scandal harshly against the government and saw it as an opportunity.
However, in the voting held, the government "escaped" by 4 votes and did not fall.
It is unknown to which state budget the money was transferred or whether it was transferred at all. The resigned minister Blazek claims that he did not make a mistake.
The incident is being investigated by the organized crime unit of the Czech police. Additionally, the Olomouc Prosecutor's Office has also launched an official investigation against Justice Minister Blazek for "abuse of office" and "money laundering" crimes.
