The Bitcoin news center controversy reveals the dilemma of power distribution in the community.
Bitcoin News Center Controversy Review
In April 2013, a "Bitcoin News Center" page was added to the Bitcoin.org website, sparking a heated debate over who should represent the Bitcoin media. This seemingly trivial controversy actually reflects broader cultural issues surrounding Bitcoin, such as its uses, development strategies, and who the true Bitcoin users are.
The issue originated from Bitcoin developer Mike Hearn's proposal to establish a news center page on the BitcoinTalk forum, inviting volunteers to serve as media contacts. However, when submitting the relevant pull requests on GitHub, two candidates, Roger Ver and Jon Matonis, faced opposition from some developers due to their political positions and other reasons.
Developers like Luke-Jr and Jeff Garzik believe that Matonis publicly advocates illegal activities, and Ver has a criminal record, making him unsuitable as a spokesperson for Bitcoin. Greg Maxwell also stated that a spokesperson for Bitcoin should be someone who can set aside political views.
This decision sparked intense controversy. Erik Voorhees and others believe it is a censorship against Ver and Matonis, contrary to the open spirit of Bitcoin. The debate quickly shifted to the BitcoinTalk forum, where Roger Ver defended himself, claiming he has done an excellent job promoting Bitcoin.
Andreas Antonopoulos is particularly dissatisfied with this matter, believing that more diverse media contacts should be added and accusing developers of playing political games. He even announced the establishment of a new website bitcoinpresscenter.org to address this issue.
After months of debate, the turmoil basically calmed down by July 2013. Mike Hearn believed that the news center had achieved some results, improving the quality of Bitcoin reporting. In January 2014, the news center page was removed and replaced with recommendations to visit the Bitcoin Foundation, among others.
This controversy, although seemingly trivial, reflects the Bitcoin community's vigilance against centralization of power. Overly centralized systems struggle to operate in Bitcoin in the long term and ultimately have to be abolished or become irrelevant. This small episode also serves as a microcosm of the development history of Bitcoin.
