Stargate Worth 500 Billion USD of OpenAI Makes Elon Musk and Netizens Angry
US President-elect Donald Trump's decision to announce a $500 billion Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure initiative, Project 'Stargate,' with OpenAI has angered tech mogul Elon Musk and many other netizens who question the excessive spending of taxpayers' money. The Stargate project will be led by the Japanese conglomerate SoftBank, the cloud computing giant Oracle, and OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, with a commitment to invest at least 500 billion dollars in AI infrastructure. OpenAI has shared detailed information about its project on its X platform (formerly known as Twitter), stating that the project will be supported by the reindustrialization process of the United States and will provide strategic capabilities to enhance national security.
It also indicates that OpenAI and SoftBank will be responsible for the financial aspects of the project, while OpenAI will handle project operations management. It also shares that MGX, a technology fund based in the United Arab Emirates, is the fourth investor in this initiative. The main initial technology partners include Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle and OpenAI, will build on the existing partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft. In response to OpenAI's announcement, Elon Musk, co-founder and CEO of X Space, who has sued OpenAI, criticized the company in a tweet, saying it was underfunded.
In addition, OpenAI being selected by the US government for the Stargate project has not been well received by many netizens as they pointed out that OpenAI is currently facing some lawsuits and also criticized for the mysterious death of former employee who later became a whistleblower Suchir Balaji. One user on X asked about the source of funding, while another claimed that the project mainly benefits wealthy individuals like Sam Altman.
However, some users have expressed distrust in Sam Altman, and a few have raised concerns about the number of jobs that this AI project can create.
While 2025 is considered a historic year in terms of AI research and funding, the controversy surrounding OpenAI's shift to a "for-profit" model persists as Elon remains a major obstacle in the development process of this fund.
